Antigen-presenting cells are like newspaper reporters — except instead of one clipboard and one beat, each reporter carries a whole stack of clipboards, one for every topic. Those clipboards are the MHC (major histocompatibility complex) molecules. The “tips” they gather are peptides — small fragments of protein from viruses, bacteria, food, or anything else that’s made its way into your body.
When a reporter gets a good tip, he runs it back to the office — a lymph node — where the T-cells are hanging around. He shows them the peptide, and if it’s the right kind of tip, they get excited and mobilize: some go to the scene themselves, others send out “helicopters with news cameras” to cover it from a distance. There’s also a police presence hanging around the lymph nodes — the T killer cells — and they’ll go apprehend the suspects directly.
The cells of our body actually communicate with each other like that as part of our immune response. Reporters aren’t the only ones carrying clipboards. Nearly every cell in your body — except red blood cells — has a stack of clipboards (MHC). So even a regular citizen can jot down a good tip and pass it along to the newspaper.
It’s a small analogy, but it captures something real about the immune system: surveillance isn’t limited to a few specialized “reporter” cells. Almost every cell in the body is equipped to flag what’s going on inside it, which means the immune system has eyes nearly everywhere at once.
